Refreshed and enhanced HRDS coming soon

by | Aug 4, 2022 | DSH cloud, DSH local, REDCap, SafePod, Secure web platforms | 0 comments

Later this year, the Highly Restricted Data Service (HRDS) will be offering a refreshed and enhanced range of services, providing secure platforms that enable researchers to work with restricted and highly restricted data.

These services are underpinned by a dedicated support team with technical, governance and analysis experience. Due to the enhanced support, governance and monitoring required, several of our offerings are now chargeable. The cost model has been designed to ensure that the service is sustainable and scalable to support future research project needs.

Using these platforms is the easiest and most cost-effective way for research projects to demonstrate compliance with University and funder data management requirements.

The cost of using the HRDS needs to be included in grant applications. Researchers should begin thinking about HRDS requirements at the pre-award stage of the research lifecycle. Each of the chargeable services from the HRDS will be integrated into the research costing tool, Blackdackel.

Follow the links below to discover more about each service:

Data Safe Haven (DSH)
The DSH offers secure data storage and compute, hosted either on campus or in the cloud. The cloud option provides additional storage and compute flexibility, should that be required.
£ There is a standard project charge of £2,000 per year.
£ The cloud option will entail additional monthly storage and compute charges.

Bespoke web application stacks
We can host and support project-specific platforms for data collection, processing and sharing e.g. enabling patients to record symptoms data, using a health app on a clinical device.
£ Support for these platforms is chargeable and will entail monthly storage and compute charges.

SafePod
Located in the Main Library, the SafePod offers a secure physical room for working with data from national SafePod Network data providers. Access to additional datasets can be requested through the HRDS.
£ Use of our SafePod is free of charge.

REDCap
REDCap is a secure survey and database platform used in the collection of research data. It is especially useful for clinical data, longitudinal research projects, and working with other researchers.
£ Use of REDCap will incur a one-off charge of £300 per project.
